Ingredients

  • 6 cups green cabbage shredded
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon bacon grease optional for flavor

Instructions

Prepare the Cabbage

  • Start by washing the cabbage well under clean water. Remove any damaged outer leaves. Slice the cabbage into thin shreds using a sharp knife. Place it in a large bowl and set aside for cooking later.

Cook the Onion

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter or bacon grease into the pan. Once melted, add chopped onion. Cook for about three minutes until the onion becomes soft and slightly golden in color.

Add the Cabbage

  • Add the shredded cabbage into the skillet with the onions. Stir well so everything mixes evenly. Cook for about five minutes. The cabbage will start to soften and reduce in size slowly.

Season the Slaw

  • Sprinkle salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes over the cabbage. Add sugar for slight sweetness. Stir everything gently so the seasoning spreads evenly through the warm cabbage mixture.

Add Vinegar and Water

  • Pour apple cider vinegar into the pan carefully. Add water to help steam the cabbage. Stir well and let it cook for another five to seven minutes until tender and flavorful.

Final Simmer and Serve

  • Let the slaw simmer on low heat until soft but not mushy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot as a side dish with your favorite Southern meals.

Notes

  • Use bacon grease for deeper smoky flavor
  • Add carrots for slight sweetness and color
  • Do not overcook cabbage to keep texture
  • Adjust vinegar for more or less tanginess
  • Add cooked bacon bits for extra richness
  • Use white vinegar if apple cider is not available
  • Add a pinch of mustard powder for depth
  • Serve immediately for best warm flavor
