Ingredients

  • 350 g self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 85 g cold butter cubed
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 175 ml milk
  • 1 egg for brushing
  • A pinch of salt
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. This helps prevent sticking and makes cleaning easy later.

Mix Dry Ingredients

  • Put flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl. Mix everything well using a spoon so ingredients spread evenly.

Add Butter

  • Add cold butter cubes into the flour mix. Rub it with your fingers until it looks like fine crumbs. This step is important for soft scones.

Add Milk

  • Slowly pour milk into the mixture. Stir gently until it forms a soft dough. Do not overmix or the scones will become hard.

Shape the Dough

  • Place dough on a floured surface. Roll it gently to about 2 cm thickness. Use a cutter to make round shapes.

Arrange on Tray

  • Place scones on the baking tray. Leave a small space between each one so they can rise properly while baking.

Add Egg Wash

  • Beat the egg in a bowl. Brush it lightly on top of each scone. This gives a golden and shiny finish.

Bake the Scones

  • Bake in the oven for 10–12 minutes. The scones should turn golden brown on top and rise nicely.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm with jam, butter, or cream for best taste.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for soft texture
  • Do not overmix the dough
  • Add raisins for sweet flavor
  • Use buttermilk for richer taste
  • Cut evenly for better baking
