James Martin Pulled Pork Recipe

Millie Rose
The James Martin pulled pork recipe is soft, juicy and full of deep flavor. It is slow-cooked until the meat falls apart easily. I love how comforting this dish feels.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg pork shoulder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

Instructions

Prepare the Pork

  • Start by patting the pork dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning stick better. Place it on a clean board. Trim extra fat if needed, but keep some for flavor and moisture.

Add the Spice Rub

  • In a bowl, mix salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Rub this mixture all over the pork. Make sure every side is covered well. This step builds strong flavor.

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F). Slow cooking is key for tender pulled pork. A low temperature helps the meat cook gently and stay juicy.

Sear the Meat

  • Heat olive oil in a pan. Sear the pork on all sides until golden brown. This locks in juices and adds a rich taste. Do not skip this step.

Add Liquid and Cover

  • Place the pork in a roasting pan. Pour apple juice around it. Cover tightly with foil. This keeps moisture inside and prevents drying during long cooking.

Slow Cook the Pork

  • Cook the pork in the oven for about 4 hours. Check once or twice. The meat should become very soft. It should easily pull apart with a fork.

Shred the Meat

  • Remove the pork from the oven. Let it rest for a few minutes. Use two forks to shred the meat into pieces. It should be very tender and juicy.

Add Sauce and Serve

  • Mix the shredded pork with barbecue sauce and brown sugar. Stir well so every piece is coated. Serve warm and enjoy the rich flavor.

Notes

  • Use smoked paprika for deeper flavor
  • Add chili flakes for a spicy kick
  • Cook in a slow cooker for easier method
  • Use different sauces like honey BBQ
  • Let meat rest before shredding
