  • 1 large red onion thinly sliced
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns optional
  • 1 garlic clove optional, sliced

Slice the Onion

  • Take a fresh red onion and peel it. Slice it very thin using a sharp knife. Thin slices help the onions absorb flavor faster and become tender and tangy.

Prepare the Pickling Liquid

  • In a bowl, mix hot water, vinegar, sugar, and salt. Stir well until sugar and salt fully dissolve. This liquid gives the onions their sweet and sour flavor balance.

Add Extra Flavor

  • If you like extra taste, add peppercorns and garlic slices. These ingredients give a stronger and deeper flavor. They are optional but highly recommended for a restaurant-style taste.

Pack the Jar

  • Place sliced onions into a clean glass jar. Press them gently so they fit well. Do not crush them too much, as you still want some crunch.

Pour the Liquid

  • Carefully pour the warm pickling liquid over the onions. Make sure all onions are fully covered. This helps them pickle evenly and absorb flavor properly.

Rest and Cool
