Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup butter cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans optional

Instructions

Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

  • Peel and chop sweet potatoes into chunks. Boil them in a large pot of water. Cook until soft and tender. Drain well and let them cool slightly before mashing.

Mash the Potatoes

  • Place cooked sweet potatoes in a large bowl. Mash them until smooth and creamy. Make sure there are no lumps for a soft texture.

Add Sweet Ingredients

  • Add brown sugar, melted butter, milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Mix everything well until smooth. The mixture should look creamy and slightly thick.

Prepare the Baking Dish

  • Grease a baking dish lightly with butter. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the dish. Spread it evenly using a spoon or spatula.

Make the Topping

  • In a bowl, mix brown sugar, flour and cold butter. Use your fingers to create a crumbly texture. Add pecans if you like extra crunch.

Add Topping on Casserole

  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture. Cover the entire surface for a crunchy golden layer.

Bake the Casserole

  • Preheat oven to 180°C. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The top should turn golden brown and slightly crispy.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm as a side dish or sweet treat.

Notes

  • Use marshmallows instead of pecan topping
  • Add nutmeg for extra warm flavor
  • Use honey instead of brown sugar
  • Add orange zest for freshness
  • Make ahead and bake later
