Ingredients

  • 5 medium potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese optional

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

  • Wash and peel the potatoes. Slice them thinly using a knife. Try to keep slices even so they cook at the same speed.

Make the Sauce

  • In a saucepan, melt butter on low heat. Add flour and mix well. Slowly add milk while stirring. Cook until the sauce becomes smooth and thick.

Add Seasoning

  • Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to the sauce. Mix well. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Layer the Potatoes

  • Place a layer of sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour some sauce over them. Repeat layers until all potatoes and sauce are used.

Add Cheese (Optional)

  • Sprinkle shredded cheese on top for extra flavor. This step is optional but makes the dish richer.

Bake the Dish

  • Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 180°C. Bake for about 60 minutes. The top should turn golden and the potatoes should be soft.

Check Doneness

  • Insert a fork into the potatoes. If it goes in easily, the dish is ready. If not, bake for a few more minutes.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove from oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm and enjoy the creamy texture.

Notes

  • Use mandoline slicer for even slices
  • Add onions for extra flavor
  • Use cream instead of milk for richness
  • Add herbs like thyme or parsley
  • Use different cheeses for variety
