Ingredients

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika optional

Instructions

Boil the Pasta

  • Fill a large pot with water and add a pinch of salt. Bring it to a boil. Add macaroni and cook until soft. Stir sometimes to prevent sticking. Drain the pasta using a strainer and set it aside.

Melt the Butter

  • Take a medium saucepan and place it on medium heat. Add butter and let it melt slowly. Do not burn the butter. Stir gently until it becomes smooth and bubbly.

Add Flour

  • Now add flour to the melted butter. Stir quickly using a spoon. Cook for one minute to remove the raw flour taste. This step helps make a thick and creamy sauce.

Pour in Milk

  • Slowly add milk while stirring constantly. This helps avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture becomes smooth and slightly thick. This is your base sauce.

Add Cheese

  • Add shredded cheddar cheese into the sauce. Stir until the cheese melts completely. The sauce should become creamy and rich. Keep heat low to avoid burning.

Add Seasoning

  • Now add salt, black pepper, garlic powder and paprika. Mix everything well. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. This step adds flavor to your dish.

Combine Pasta and Sauce

  • Add the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce. Mix gently until every piece is coated well. Cook for two more minutes so everything blends nicely.

Serve Warm

  • Turn off the heat and serve immediately. You can add extra cheese on top if you like. Enjoy your creamy and delicious mac and cheese.

Notes

  • Use fresh shredded cheese for better melting
  • Add cooked chicken or beef for extra protein
  • Mix in vegetables like broccoli or peas
  • Use different cheeses like mozzarella or gouda
  • Add chili flakes for a spicy twist
  • Do not overcook pasta or it becomes mushy
