Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Onions Slowly

  • Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet. Add sliced onions and cook slowly over medium heat. Stir often for about 15 minutes. The onions should become soft, golden, and sweet-smelling without burning.

Brown the Ground Beef

  • Push onions to one side of the skillet. Add ground beef to the empty side. Break the meat apart using a wooden spoon. Cook until fully browned and no pink remains in the skillet.

Add Garlic and Seasonings

  • Stir garlic, onion powder, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper into the beef mixture. Cook for about one minute. The garlic should smell rich and fragrant without turning dark or bitter.

Make the Rich Sauce

  • Sprinkle flour over the meat mixture. Stir well until combined. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring constantly. Add Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. Let everything simmer gently for five minutes until thick and glossy.

Toast the Buns

  • While the filling cooks, lightly toast the hamburger buns. Toasting helps the bread stay firm and prevents soggy sandwiches. Warm buns also taste better with the cheesy beef mixture.

Add Cheese and Serve

  • Spoon the beef mixture onto the toasted buns. Place provolone cheese slices on top. Let the cheese melt slightly from the heat. Sprinkle fresh parsley over everything before serving warm.

Notes

  • Cook onions slowly for the best sweet flavor.
  • Use lean beef to reduce extra grease.
  • Add mushrooms for extra richness.
  • Swiss cheese works well instead of provolone.
  • Brioche buns taste soft and buttery.
  • Add red pepper flakes for heat.
  • Make the filling one day ahead for deeper flavor.
  • Use ground turkey for a lighter version.
